History and Development

Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Osijek was founded in 1978, but the university programme of electrical engineering has been carried out since 1990. During that period, the Faculty has developed into a respectable regional institution, which is the basis for implementing study programmes at the highest level. During the previously mentioned period, the Faculty has been equipped with modern lecture rooms and staff offices, but what is more important it has equipped laboratories, which are of greatest importance in the modern education of students studying electrical and computer engineering.

Development in brief - key years and facts:
o 1978: High education in electrical engineering in Osijek has been established (College of Electrical Machines)
o 1991: Faculty of Electrical Engineering has been founded (power system engineering)
o 1993-1997: Electronics, automation, communication and computer science and postgraduate study programs introduced
o 2001: Reconstruction of the building, sponsored by the Croatian government in co-operation with Siemens (over 5000 sqm with fully equipped laboratories and classrooms)
o 2005: New building for computer engineering studies and research at University campus (over 3500 sqm, fully reconstructed in 2011)
o 2005: Undergraduate studies (Bachelor degree and Master degree in accordance with Bologna process introduced with Power Systems, Communication, Automation and Computer Science study programs
o 2006: Postgraduate studies (doctoral degree) in accordance with Bologna process introduced

University studies

Republic of Croatia is a full member of European High Education Area (EHEA) since Prague 2001. Since academic 2005/2006 high education at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering is fully compatible with the EHEA, according to the goals of Bologna declaration and follow-up process. There are three levels of university education:

1. Bachelor degree studies

Since academic year 2005/2006 students can enter the following three-year (180 ECTS) university undergraduate (bachelor) studies at Faculty of Electrical engineering:
Undergraduate (Bachelor) Studies in Electrical Engineering
Undergraduate (Bachelor) Studies in Computer Engineering

Beside obligatory courses, in electrical engineering there are several elective courses modules in power system engineering or communications and IT. By graduating from undergraduate studies candidates obtain the academic degree of University Bachelor Engineer in Electrical Engineering or University Bachelor Engineer in Computer Engineering.

2. Master degree studies

Two-years (120 ECTS) university graduate (master) studies at Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Osijek, started for the first time in academic 2008/2009:
Graduate (Master) Studies in Electrical Engineering - Power Systems Engineering
Graduate (Master) Studies in Electrical Engineering - Communication and IT
Graduate (Master) Studies in Computer Engineering - Process Computing

By graduating from graduate studies candidates obtain the academic degree of Master Engineer in Electrical Engineering (Power System Engineering or Communication and IT) or Master Engineer in Computing Science.

3. Postgraduate studies

By finishing the three-years (180 ECTS) Postgraduate Doctoral Studies in Electrical Engineering in Power System Engineering or Communications and IT candidates obtain the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electrical Engineering - branch Power System Engineering or Communications and IT.

There is also the possibility of taking the three-semesters (90 ECTS) postgraduate Master Specialist Studies, more related to the industry. By finishing the program, candidates obtain the academic degree of Master Engineer in Electrical Engineering - Specialist or Master Engineer in Computing Science - Specialist.

Application-oriented studies

Application-oriented or should we say industry-oriented studies in electrical engineering are educating the students for labour and engineering practice in the fields of:
Power Systems Engineering,
Automation,
Informatics,
which first year students are electing upon entering the studies. Three-years (180 ECTS) studies consist of obligatory and elective courses, with industry application orientation which enables the graduates to fully incorporate into the working environment in the named fields. In order to achieve that goal, the fourth semester mostly consists of industry practice run by the industry experts (named as supervisors by the Faculty).

By graduating from application-oriented studies candidates obtain the academic degree of Application-oriented Bachelor Engineer in Electrical Engineering. Access to the university master studies is enabled through special one-year differential program approved by the Faculty Council.
